Congratulations to U.S. “CDO of the Year” Award Winners
Linda Avery, Atif Rafiq, and Fred Santarpia!
During the 7th annual NYC CDO Summit on this past Wednesday May 8, 2019, the CDO Club formally announced the winners of the 2019 U.S. Chief Data Officer and Chief Digital Officer of the Year awards, and the 2018 U.S. Chief Digital Officer of the Year award winner.
Linda Avery, Chief Data Officer and Head of Data and Statistics at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, was recognized as the U.S. Chief Data Officer of the Year 2019.
In July 2014, Linda Avery joined the New York Federal Reserve Bank as their first Chief Data Officer. Over the past five years, Linda has shaped the Bank’s data strategy, starting up a new organization that, through strong business connectivity, has driven change in the Bank’s data management practices and has cultivated capabilities in the areas of AI, data visualization, and product strategy.
“Linda Avery realized early in her career that the difference between success and failure can come down to how you manage data. For the past five years as Chief Data Officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and her previous twenty years at Goldman Sachs, Linda has been entrusted with managing mission-critical data in very demanding environments to ensure the success of the business and its clients, with a focus on innovation and business transformation. I am delighted to name Linda Avery as the U.S. Chief Data Officer of the Year for 2019,” said David Mathison, CDO Club founder and CEO.
Atif Rafiq, newly appointed President of Commercial and Growth at MGM Resorts International and former Chief Digital Officer at Volvo Cars, was recognized as the U.S. Chief Digital Officer of the Year for 2019.
Mr. Rafiq has both disrupted as a new technology entrant, and helped reposition large incumbent companies. Atif was one of the first chief digital officers in the Fortune 100, and has helped shape the profile of this role as global corporations have embraced it. He provides strong vision for new consumer experiences and products with relentless customer focus, and high business discipline around execution. He is a talent magnet who excels at creating high performance teams aimed at missionary work and has mentored several executives to the C-level.
“There’s a great rewiring of every large company underway at the moment. In the role of CDO, you’re often in the middle of it – culture change, organizing a company around customers, recruitment of new tech-savvy talent, and business model evolution. I’ve been privileged to play the CDO role for companies with great brands, huge scale and global presence. And this recognition from CDO Club is the cherry on top,” said Rafiq.
Fred Santarpia, digital transformation expert and former Chief Digital Officer at Condé Nast, was recognized as the U.S. Chief Digital Officer of the Year for 2018.
Santarpia was named Chief Digital Officer of Condé Nast in October 2014, responsible for building and executing the company’s digital strategy, leading to explosive growth in both digital audience and revenue.
He led the company’s acquisitions of Pitchfork, Poetica, Backchannel, Citizen Net, and the launch of the company’s digital innovation center in Austin, Texas. He oversaw the development and launch of Conde Nast Spire, the company’s first ever proprietary data platform.
“On paper, the CDO title implies the importance of the digital platform over all else, but the truly successful CDO recognizes that its an emphasis on people, not platform, that matters most. I take great pride in the strong transformative cultures I’ve built across my career. They all had one thing in common – they were built on a foundation of great teams. On behalf of their work, it’s an honor to be recognized by the CDO Club and to receive this award,” said Santarpia.
